Steampunk: The Mixing of the Past and the Future
Steampunk is a genre that mixes past and present. It's a post apocalyptic world that has gone back to Victorian times where everything is steam powered mixed with all the inventions of the future. The look of steampunk is an edgy Victorian look with those futuristic elements thrown in that the Victorians may have only dreamed off. Steampunk shows up in all forms of genre: literature, fashion, jewelry, and pop culture.
Steampunk started as a sub-genre of science fiction in the 1960s and 70s but didn't really start taking off until the late 80s/early 90s before it became what it is today. The increase in popularity happened in the early 2000s.
From literature came movies, television, and video games. Will Smith's movie Wild Wild West shows many elements of Steampunk. The Doctor's console in the T.A.R.D.I.S, in the British television show Doctor Who, has many steampunk elements subtly thrown in. The video Game BioShock Infinite has elements of steampunk in the floating city where the game takes place.
From media came art, fashion, and design. From 2009 to 2010 the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford had a steampunk exhibit. In 2010 The Libratory Steampunk Art Gallery opened in Oamaru, New Zealand.
